Scotland’s rulers, including James II and James IV, used the ancient Illieston Castle in West Lothian as their royal hunting lodge during the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
However, the vast grounds of the remote Scottish castle are considerably older, having been named Halistonium in Roman times and documented as early as the 1200s.

The massive house has a huge wooden front entrance and crow-stepped gables on the façade. Within, there are dual aspect windows, a stone spiral staircase, and fireplaces that are typical of the era. Currently used as a study and spare bedroom, the little turret room is accessed via a supplementary spiral staircase.
