This impressive and historically significant Grade I listed castle is for sale. It is located in Wiltshire, on the outskirts of the charming market town of Devizes.
Devizes Castle, constructed of beautiful stone with enticing castellations and turrets, is a majestic residence rich in history, offering views of the rolling countryside to the west and charming chimney pot views to the east.
In addition to the kitchen/breakfast room, sitting room, drawing room, dining room, library, study, fernery, secondary kitchen, utility room, and boot room, the property has nine bedrooms and four bathrooms.
Because of its outstanding architectural or historic significance, the castle is classified as Grade I. Numerous period details may be found, such as the intricately carved high ceilings and the stone mullioned windows and arches.
The dining room has ample space for large gatherings or family meals, and the library has two walls lined with exquisitely carved bookcases.
According to the records, Bishop Osmund of Salisbury constructed the first fortress around 1080. During King Henry I’s reign, it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in stone. Afterwards, it gained popularity as a royal home.
There were rumors that Edward I, Henry III, and King John had all stayed at the fortress. It seems that it was held by the Crown until the 17th century, at which point it was inherited by the English queens, including the wives of Henry VIII.
However, the Royalists had taken control of the castle by 1645, and it was mainly destroyed during the King and Parliament Civil War in the 17th century.
Devizes did not see a castle again until the 1830s. High above the market town, the current structure was created by architect H.E. Goodridge.
Devizes Castle is £3.25 million on the market through Savills.
