Cannonball markings on the lower walls indicate that it was fired upon by Claverhouses Dragoons during a skirmish following the Battle of Bothwell Brig, which caused it to fall into disrepair in 1678. When new roof was constructed in 1883 by Victorian owners, it was restored. Following a powerful storm in 1922, the roof from the 19th century collapsed. Before the meticulous repair that took place between 1977 and 1985, the property lay abandoned. After that, Mains Castle was once again occupied, but this time as a family residence.
